Bangalore police have arrested Surendra Babu, a local Janata Dal-S leader for the mysterious death of his wife Hemashree, a Kannada TV serial actress.
Surendra Babu had contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections on a JD-S ticket from Bangalore North. He had then filed an affidavit with the Election Commission stating he had properties worth Rs 280 crore. Surendra Babu had brought his wife Hemashree in a critical condition in the Baptist Hospital here on Tuesday evening. The doctors said, Hemashree was already dead at the time of being brought to the hospital. In his statement to Hebbal police, Surendra Babu said, he was proceeding to Anantapur with his wife on Tuesday, when she suddenly fell ill on the way. Police doubted the veracity of Surendra Babu's statement, as the hospital doctors said, Hemashree was dead at least four hours before she was brought to the hospital. The body was sent for post mortem on Wednesday. Police sources said, there were at least three serious injuries on the actor's body - her nose, neck and lower abdomen. Source said, the post mortem report revealed poisonous substance in her stomach. The viscera has been sent for forensic inquiry. 48-year-old Surendra Babu had married Hemashree on June 27 last year. It was his second marriage, conducted in secrecy in Tirupathi. On the second day of her marriage, Hemashree had complained to Bangalore police that she was forcibly married and she was unwilling to stay with her husband. After counselling, police had sent the actor back with her husband home. Sources close to Hemashree revealed that the actress was depressed since her marriage, as her parents had forced her to marry the politician. Sources also disclosed that the actor's parents were deep in debts with Surendra Babu, after which the politician expressed his desire to marry Hemashree. Police have registered a case of murder and arrested Surendra Babu, who has been sent to 10 days police custody by a local magistrate. A police team has left for Anantapur to conduct further probe. Police is also checking several phone calls made by the politician to the actor's mother on Tuesday.
Shalu Menon
Thiruvananthapuram: An actress from Kerala was arrested today for her alleged connections with the two main accused in the solar scam case. The case deals with the two accused - Sarita Nair and Biju Radhakrishnan - allegedly cheating people financially by promising to provide them equipment to tap green sources of energy. Shalu Menon, the Kottayam based actress and dancer, had allegedly offered Mr Radhakrishnan her car and offered to help him escape. Mr Radhakrishnan was also allegedly using Ms Menon's phone while he was on the run. Another police complaint accuses her of duping a businessman along with Mr Radhakrishnan. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's office is also mired in controversy. One of his former personal assistant was arrested last month, and the opposition has alleged that the office had been in close contact with the two accused. The opposition has also alleged that the Chief Minister's Office attempted to favour the company owned by the two accused in getting government contracts, a charge Mr Chandy has denied. Three government officials were recently suspended for posting objectionable comments against the Chief Minister on a social networking site, and linking him to Ms Nair.
